Qualifications
Dr Girish Velis has experience of twelve years in Ophthalmology. He completed his MBBS from the prestigious Seth GS medical college & KEM Hospital (Mumbai) followed by postgraduate training in ophthalmology from renowned Aravind eye care system (south India). He did his long-term fellowship in vitreoretinal surgeries from Aravind eye hospital (Pondicherry), that trained him in advanced skills in the medical/ surgical management of various vitreoretinal diseases, Uvea, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and ocular trauma. He worked as a consultant for a year in the same institute to further upgrade his knowledge.
Work experience
He has worked as a full-time consultant vitreoretina surgeon at Vision hospital mapusa for two years. He was in charge of vitreoretina services at Goa medical college (Bambolim) for four years. He set up the speciality services for retina at GMC and single handedly performed more than 700 complex retina surgeries, 1500 intravitreal injections, 4000 lasers for diabetic retinopathy at GMC. His expertise in GMC was helpful in preventing blindness in about 200 premature babies (treatment of ROP).
Professional (surgical) experience
He has more than seven years of experience in diagnosing and treating patients with vitreoretinal diseases like diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, vascular occlusions, uveitis, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), ocular trauma etc. Overall, in his career he has performed around 1200 retina surgeries, 5000 intravitreal injections, 15000 lasers and treated more than 300 premature babies for ROP.
